Dr. Walter Johnson received his medical degree from Loma Linda University School of Medicine, California and practiced as a neurosurgeon in Loma Linda, California.
Currently, Dr. Johnson is Head of the Global Initiative on Emergency and Essential Surgical Care (GIEESC) Program at the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva, Switzerland, coordinating Global Surgery work at the WHO.
The WHO Global Initiative for Emergency and Essential Surgical Care (GIEESC) is a global forum that convenes multidisciplinary stakeholders representing health professionals, public health experts, health authorities and local and international organizations.
Established in December 2005, the GIEESC has grown to include over 2300 members from 140 countries which collaborates to share knowledge, advise policy formation and develop educational resources to reduce the burden of death and disability from conditions that could be treated through surgery.
Dr. Park obtained his medical degree from the Rutgers University in New Jersey and then trained in neurosurgery at the Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is affiliated with the Program in Global Surgery and Social Change at Harvard Medical School as the Paul Farmer Global Surgery Scholar.
In 2013, he volunteered with the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies and the Foundation for International Education in Neurological surgery to support Cambodian neurosurgeons. Prior to Cambodia, he was the Director of Spine Surgery at the Myungsung Christian Medical Center in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (2009 to 2013).
He serves as a member of the Advisory Committee for the Foundation of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies.
